You should probably ask any cop in the United States
They seem to think guns are very effective at preventing crimes and apprehending criminals.
"Nationwide, law enforcement made an estimated 11,205,833 arrests in 2014. Of these arrests, 498,666 were for violent crimes, and 1,553,980 were for property crimes. "
That same year, the FBI reported there were 11,961 homicides. That figure includes lawful homicide by police and other citizens.
Of those homicides, only 67.9% involved a firearm
So, even if we only take into account police arrests, and only take into account violent crimes, and don't separate lawful from unlawful homicides ...
....there are still 61 arrests for violent crimes for every 1 homicide using a gun.
